Introduction: Due to its vital nature, the nursing profession is always exposed to work stress, psychological pressure, and high emotional demands. The present study aimed to predict coping strategies based on emotional exhaustion and cognitive flexibility in nurses working in teaching hospitals in Bandar Abbas.
Methods: This study was descriptive-correlational. The statistical population included all nurses working in teaching hospitals in Bandar Abbas in 1404. Participants were selected using convenience sampling and based on inclusion criteria. Data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire, the “Coping Strategies Inventory”, the “Maslach Burnout Inventory”, and the “Cognitive Flexibility Inventory”. In the present study, content validity was examined qualitatively and reliability was examined using the internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the instruments. Data were analyzed in SPSS. 26.
Results: The greatest predictive power is related to emotion-focused coping (F= 6.21, P<0.001). Other dependent variables, including cognitive appraisal coping (F = 3.98, P< 0.001), social support seeking (F= 3.71, P< 0.001), physical restraint (F= 5.41, P< 0.001), and problem-solving coping (F=2.82, P< 0.001), are affected by emotional exhaustion and cognitive flexibility.
Conclusion: Emotional exhaustion and cognitive flexibility play an important and decisive role in the formation of coping styles in nurses. It is suggested that group counseling opportunities and the formation of support groups among nurses be provided, and that establishing communication channels with managers and clinical psychologists can help reduce psychological stress and strengthen adaptive coping styles.
