The Mediating Role of Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction in Relation to Cognitive Abilities and Internet Addiction in High School Students of Qom City

Introduction: Adolescence, as a sensitive stage in psychological development, is accompanied by numerous challenges that make it essential to address the issues of this period of life, especially the addictive behaviors of adolescent. The present study aimed to determine the mediating role of basic psychological needs satisfaction in relation to cognitive abilities and Internet addiction in high school students in Qom.   
Methods:The research method was descriptive-correlation. The statistical population of this research included all the students of the second secondary school in Qom city in the academic year of 2023-2024. A sample equal to 300 people was selected from the mentioned community by convenience sampling method. The research instruments included a demographic questionnaire, "Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale", "Cognitive Abilities Questionnaire" and "Internet Addiction Test. The construct validity of the instruments was examined by examining the convergent validity method using the average variance extracted (AVE) and the divergent validity using the heterotrait-monotrait ratio (HTMT). Composite reliability and internal consistency reliability were also examined and confirmed by calculating the Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the instruments. Data analysis was performed using SPSS. 26 and PLS. 3.
Results: The indicators of the proposed model have an acceptable fit. The path of cognitive abilities to basic psychological needs satisfaction (β=0.573, P=0.000), the path of cognitive abilities to Internet addiction (β=0.330, P=0.000) and the path of basic psychological needs satisfaction to Internet addiction (P=0.000, β= -0.387) was obtained. Also, the mediating role of basic psychological needs (P=0.000, β=-0.222), was confirmed at the confidence level of 0.95.
Conclusion: Basic psychological needs satisfaction plays a mediating role in the relationship between cognitive abilities and Internet addiction in secondary school students. It is suggested to conduct psychological interventions based on the training of cognitive abilities and training aligned with basic psychological needs in order to reduce internet addiction among teenagers.
